Jewell Ruth Bell Hix was born on August 30, 1928 and died on August 28, 2016 just two days short of her 88th birthday. She was born in Big Valley, Texas and lived in the Vernon area through her high school years. She married her high school sweetheart Fowler Hix on April 6, 1944. Fowler preceded her in death after 39 years of marriage. She is survived by three children and their spouses: Ron and Jackie Hix of Albuquerque, New Mexico, E. Jane Hix and Daphne Goldman of Haddon Heights, New Jersey, and Judy Abercrombie of Fort Worth, Texas. She is also survived by a sister Janice Bergmann of Pleasant Hill, Missouri. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren and spouses and ten great grandchildren. They are Jason and Jodie Hix of Albuquerque, Jeff and Stephanie Hix of Albuquerque, Angela and Brian Kito of Fort Worth, and Fowler Abercrombie of Arlington, Texas. The great grandchildren are Jordan Hix of Los Gatos, California, Justin Hix of Albuquerque, Jessie Hix of Albuquerque, Zachary Bolin of Fort Worth, Kathryn Abercrombie of Arlington, Fowler Abercombie, Jr. of Arlington, Thomas Kito, of Fort Worth, Jackson Hix of Albuquerque, Makena Hix of Albuquerque, and Mackenzie Kito of Fort Worth.
The first half of Jewel's adult life was dedicated to raising her children. She not only was a superb homemaker, but she also volunteered in the community in which she lived. The family lived in various communities in West Texas as they followed the growing oil business. They settled in Jal, New Mexico for several years. Eventually they moved to Roswell, New Mexico. Jewell volunteered with the Woman's Missionary Union in each community in which she lived. She also volunteered with youth sport organizations and served as the official score keeper. In addition, she enjoyed creating all sorts textiles through embroidery, crochet, and use of the sewing machine. Once her children entered college, she entered the workplace as a bookkeeper for a moving company. She worked for EDS for approximately 25 years. Upon retirement, she moved to Vernon, Texas to be near her mother and sisters. There she was an active member of the Wilbarger County Hospital Women's Auxiliary where she held positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer. She also volunteered at the polls during elections. She then moved to Fort Worth to live with her daughter. In November 2015, she moved into Autumn Leaves at Fossil Creek, a memory care facility. In addition to the care she received from Autumn Leaves, her care was supplemented with care from Vitas Hospice Services the last two weeks of her life.
