Jimmie Paul Miller

James (Jimmie) Paul Miller of Southlake, Texas passed away after a lengthy illness early Friday morning.

Jim had a long and impressive career in the newspaper advertising and marketing field in Oklahoma starting at the Chickasha Express Star and working his way up to retail advertising manager at the Tulsa World and Tribune to advertising/marketing director at the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise to regional publisher overseeing multiple newspapers for the Donrey Media Group. He continued his career in Texas as assistant advertising/marketing director at the Houston Chronicle. He also opened his own agency in Houston upon leaving the Chronicle and took on the national sales manager job at the Houston Business Journal. Later upon returning to Oklahoma he became publisher of the Norman Transcript. He is a past president of the Tulsa Ad Club and the Midwest Newspaper Advertising Executives Association.

Jim was born in Rockport, Missouri on February 20, 1931. He grew up in Chickasha, Oklahoma and went to the University of Oklahoma (OU) graduating in 1952 with a BA degree in journalism. Later he received his masters in English from Tulsa University and was a graduate of the American Press Institute where he also served as an instructor.

At OU Jim joined ROTC and following graduation was commissioned as a U.S. Army second lieutenant in the Oklahoma 45th Infantry Division. Soon after his commission, Jim’s division was deployed to Japan and later South Korea where he served from 1952 to 1955. Prior to shipping out he married his high school sweetheart, Rosamond Laboon.

Jim served two years overseas and then returned to Oklahoma where he continued serving in the Army Reserve for over 32 years, finally retiring in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel with the 75th MAC in Houston.

He also ran for the Oklahoma state legislature in the 90s. Throughout his career he was also a board member with the local Chamber of Commerce in Tulsa, Bartlesville, Norman and Houston.

Following retirement from Donrey, Jim and his wife moved to Southlake where he continued to write for local publications and edit novels. He was also a senior board member of the Southlake City Commission.

Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rosamond, his four children and their spouses, Tim and Deirdre Miller, Greg and Gaye Miller, Danny and Doris Miller, Jean and Porter Stiles; his sister Suzanne her spouse Howard Moore and their children Jacob and Patrick, and 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Jim and Rosie are members of the White's Chapel UMC in Southlake.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lucas Funeral Home, Grapevine, Texas. Funeral and memorial services are pending.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association in the name of Jim Miller.
