Johannas Antonie “John” “Jan” Winterink passed away in Fort Worth, Texas on July 30, 2022 at the age of 92.
John was born on February 15, 1930 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Hendrik and Marie Winterink.
At the age of 14 John went to work selling bread on the streets of Amsterdam, after losing his father during World War II. After graduating high school in the Netherlands he joined the US Air Force. John completed his basic training and went on to serve 10 years of Active Duty.
On September 26, 1956 John married Rose Yrene. They were married for 67 years.
John earned a BS in Education from the College of St. Joseph in 1962 and a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education with the area of concentration in math from the University of Albuquerque in 1966. He loved mathematical problems.
In between finishing college, John joined the Army Reserves in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He retired from the military with 20 years of service (10 years Active Air Force and 10 years US Army Reserves). He retired as a Msgt. [E8] from the Army.
He taught various Math courses for 32 years at the high school level and Vo tech. For approximately 7-12 years John worked at the UNM in Albuquerque teaching Math courses two nights a week.
John is preceded in death by his wife Rose Y. Winterink, who passed away on August 9, 2019. He is also preceded in death by his sister Tinie Winterink.
John’s survivors include two sons, John and Marvin Winterink; daughter Rosemary Sparling (Winterink); brother Antonie Winterink and wife Kitty; grandchildren, Alex and wife Jaymie, Angela, Anna, Adam and wife Josie, Ashley Sparling, and Michael, Christina, Joseph, Matthew and David Winterink; and nine great-grandchildren.
