John Wallace Bobo

November 1, 1935 — November 20, 2022

Reverend John Wallace Bobo, age 87, was born November 1, 1935 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He went to be with his Lord on November 20, 2022. Family members with him felt the presence of heaven in the room and were filled with joy, then saw John’s face transitioned from pained & pale to full of color, radiant, full of peace and almost glowing as he joined his heavenly family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgbert Miles Bobo, Sr. and Bessie May Hamilton Bobo; his 4 brothers, Ed Junior, George, Gene Paul and Leonard and 2 sisters, Laura Leigh Stipe and Barbara LeGrande. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley Mae Roberts and children Roy, Sherry and Tim, 7 grandchildren Jacob Bobo, Nicole Bobo, Eric Sepich, Lindsey Sepich, Katie Bobo, Jonathan Bobo, and Rachel Bobo, and 4 great-grandchildren Jaycie Bobo, Silas Bobo, Landon Bobo and Valerie Young and several nieces and nephews.
John attended Oklahoma Baptist University, Southwestern Seminary and received his doctoral degree from Luther Rice Seminary. He had a servant’s heart as a minister, overseeing building programs at every church where he was pastor and served the congregation. He started his ministry at Sandy Hill Indian Baptist Church in Stratford, Oklahoma where he and his then girlfriend, Shirley, ministered to the native population. He then was pastor at Golden Acres Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the home church of his now wife, Shirley. He moved to Fort Worth in 1958 to attend Southwestern Seminary where he had his first two children. He was then called to pastor at First Baptist Church in Keyes, Oklahoma where his youngest child was born. From there, he served at First Baptist Church, Memphis, Texas before coming to Shady Oaks Baptist Church in Hurst Texas in October, 1970.
He served at Shady Oaks Baptist Church until December, 2002, a church where everyone felt like family. He led church members on many mission trips around the United States and the world, sharing God’s message to all he met. When he retired from Shady Oaks Baptist, he changed from occasionally volunteering for the Hurst Police Department part time to being the head chaplain until 2018. He enjoyed his ride-alongs and ministered to Hurst residents in crisis as well as to the officers.
He treasured the time he had with family, church members, first responders, neighbors, friends, and people he just met throughout his life. Although he lost contact with some of you when his dementia clouded his mind, he is rejoicing with a healed body and mind in Heaven now.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to the Baptist University of the Americas where he served several years on the Board of Trustees. They are dedicated to training students from diverse cultures all over the world to share the word of God. Their address is 2418 W. Ansley Blvd. San Antonio, TX 78224, www.bua.edu .
