John Cottrill was born Feb. 20, 1934 in Carbon, West Virginia and died Sept 8, 2019 in North Richland Hills, TX. He raised a family and had a successful career as an orthodontist in the Ft. Worth, TX area.

John grew up in the small town of Logan, Ohio where his mother was a teacher and his father was a Chevrolet car salesman. He was raised in the Lutheran Church. In the early 1950’s, John was a talented, left handed basketball and baseball player and at the age of 16,gained an athletic scholarship to attend Capitol University near Columbus, Ohio. He was named to their All-Time Basketball Letter winner list for 1953 and 1954. After undergraduate school he joined the US Airforce as an officer and navigator, then returned to Dental School at The Ohio State University and later to their Orthodontics program after his military service. He met and married Bobbie Louise Carpenter of Houston, TX in 1956 and they had 4 children.

John practiced Dentistry for several years in his hometown of Logan, Ohio. Though he chose to attend post graduate school at The Ohio State University, it was a proud achievement that he was also accepted to the Baylor University Orthodontics program which at the time, limited acceptance to only 2 out-of-state students per year.

In 1968, John and Bobbie moved the family to Ft. Worth, where he practiced Orthodontics for many years. Among other community projects he and Bobbie supported, he donated his time to under-served children and provided many kids with free braces.

He was a die-hard athlete and a life-long sports fan. He played basketball and baseball well into his 40’s with intramural and Church league teams. He loved both college and professional basketball and football and followed many teams and players. He supported the OSU Buckeye’s under Woody Hayes and the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry.
John was involved for many years with the American Paint Horse Association. He and daughter Amy traveled and attended many competitions across the country.

In the mid-1980’s, at the peak of his career and in the prime of his life, John suffered a life-altering stroke. He struggled for years dealing with the side effects and seeking improvement in his day to day life. He spent his last years in an assisted living facility in North Richland Hills.
John was a kind and loving father and husband with a gentle spirit and generous demeanor. He will be missed by many.
