Kay Mcfarland

December 18, 1926 — August 15, 2018

Bertie Charmian McFarland, more affectionately known as Kay and MiMi, was called home to be with our Lord on August 15, 2018. She passed peacefully at home in Burleson, Texas.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lucas and Blessing Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday at Lucas and Blessing Funeral Home.
Kay was born to Charles Alexander Modisett (Pa) and Willie Bertie Modisett (Mom) on December 12, 1926 in Angelina County, Texas near Huntington. After graduating high school, at the age of 17, she boarded a train bound for Fort Worth. There she would go on to complete nursing school at City County Hospital, which is known today as John Peter Smith. Fort Worth is where she found the love of her life, Hugh Wendell McFarland, who she met when he returned home from World War II. They married in November of 1948 and spent 66 amazing years together until he went home to be with the Lord on June 3, 2015. Kay was a devout believer in Jesus Christ, whom she gave her life to at an early age during a tent revival in Angelina County. When she and Wendell became members at Morningside Baptist Church (which later became Hallmark Baptist Church) she reaffirmed her faith to Christ in 1951. Kay worked as a nurse for City County Hospital and later for hand specialist, Dr. J. Robert Cochran, until he closed his practice and she retired.
It is only fitting that Kay worked for a hand surgeon, since her hands never stopped serving those in her presence. She loved to bake and cook so when company arrived she could feed them like royalty. Guests quickly learned she was also a woman of determination when they tried to decline her food, as she would only continue to ask what else she could make until they caved. She was a selfless, yet bold woman who stood for what is right and always professed her love for Jesus and family. In her final days she claimed, “I think I know why the Lord hasn’t taken me, it’s because I have been asking him to take me to see Wendell and Jesus. I have the order wrong. It should be Jesus then Wendell.” Even in her last moments she served as an archetype of faith for her family and all of those she met. Matthew 6:33: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Kay is survived by her two loving sons: Charles and Mike; Daughter-in-laws: Janie and Jan; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; her sister Moddy, and brother Cary.
