Larry Pipes passed away at the age of 90 Monday August 8, 2022. He was born June
15, 1932 to Harold and Madine (Cornish) Pipes in Watauga, Texas. He leaves behind
his devoted wife Gwen Nell (Pearson) Pipes. They were married for 69 years. He is
also survived by his brother Ronny Pipes and wife Jeanette; his son Monte Pipes and
wife Carolyn; his son Ronny Pipes; his daughter Margaret (Pipes) Cantrell and
husband Craig; and his grandson Benjamin Pipes.
Larry grew up on his father’s dairy farm in Keller, Texas. He was in the band and played
baseball at Carter High School and Texas Christian University. He was a handsome,
thoughtful man who surely turned heads, but his heart belonged to his childhood
sweetheart with whom he raised three successful children.
Larry was in ROTC and graduated from TCU with a degree in mathematics and physics.
He worked for ARCO as a geophysicist for 32 years.
Larry carefully managed his finances so that he could retire early and pursue his many
interests. He excelled at many activities, including skiing, golf and bridge. He loved to
travel with his wife, friends and family. He participated in many bridge tournaments and
achieved the status of Life Master. His golf handicap was in the single digits.
He was very methodical as he worked on cars or woodworking projects. If you asked
him for help with a task you had to be prepared to wait while he “did his thinking.” But
you could then rest assured he had evaluated all angles and the task could be
completed correctly.
It goes without saying his favorite sports teams were the Rangers and Cowboys. In his
later years, he took up oil painting and produced some wonderful paintings in the style
of Bob Ross.
He was a unique, thoughtful man of immense integrity with a keen sense of humor who
was a mentor to many, a good friend to all and a loving family man. We are all better
people for having him in our lives. He will be sorely missed.
Per Larry's wishes, a celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.
