Our beloved father, father-in-law, grandfather, relative and friend, László Hertelendy, aged 92, of Grapevine, Texas, passed away peacefully on 13 September 2022 at his Meadowood Assisted Living home. He was surrounded by his immediate family and had received well wishes from his extended family in Europe, his friends and acquaintances in the Dallas, TX area, where he spent the last four years of life.
László, was born in Sümeg, Hungary on 28 July 1930 as the youngest of fifteen Hertelendy children. He was 26 years old when he participated in the 1956 Hungarian revolution against Russian occupation and was forced to leave Hungary. He ultimately emigrated to the United States settling in Gary, IN and in 1958, he married his wife, the late Ágota Hertelendy (Horváth), who was from Vitnyéd, Hungary. Together, they proudly raised four sons (Csaba, Zsolt, Attila and László), supporting each in their college education and instilling into them a rich Hungarian cultural experience.
László retired from US Steel, American Bridge Division in 1987 where he worked as a High Voltage Electrician. In his career, László had a hand in the building of several iconic structures including the Tappan Zee Bridge, NY and the Sears Tower in Chicago. László was an active supporter of the local Hungarian community and affiliated Churches. As he had done since a young age, he would often step in as an altar minister at the Holy Trinity Hungarian Church in East Chicago, IN with Father Skerl.
In 2018, he relocated to Meadowood Assisted Care Facility in Grapevine, TX where he made several new friends with the Meadowood staff and community. László was always physically active, enjoyed gardening, and going to the gym with his dear friend, Elemér Engel. Like his time living in Indiana, László was a proud member of the greater Hungarian community in the Dallas, TX area and attended holy mass, celebrated by his friend, Father Leloczky Julius at the Our Lady of Dallas Cistercian Abbey, located in Irving, TX, as well being a parishioner at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church Bedford, TX.
László is survived by his immediate family: Csaba and Terezinha Hertelendy of Vienna, VA; Attila Hertelendy and Ilona Pesti of Bedford, TX; László and Beáta Hertelendy of Manassas, VA; Jennifer Hertelendy of Mason, OH; several Grandchildren in the United States and numerous Cousins, Nieces and Nephews located across Hungary.
László was preceded in death by his beloved parents Rozália Dörnyei and Gyula Hertelendy; wife, Ágota Hertelendy (Horváth) who passed away in 1992 in Merrillville, IN and son, Dr. Zsolt Hertelendy who passed away in 2017 in Mason, OH.
