LaVerne “Vern” Francis McFarland, of Hurst Texas passed away peacefully on November 24, 2019. Vern was born on May 10, 1938 in Craig, Colorado to the late Willis “Hugh” McFarland and Eunice Ila (Erickson) McFarland, he was 81.
Vern spent his early years working his family farm. After graduating high school, Vern enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving our country honorably for over 20 years. Soon after enlisting, Vern met the love of his life, Barbara J Stilwell on a blind date, in Alamogordo, New Mexico taking them on an adventure of a lifetime. Vern and Barbara were married on March 24, 1962 and together, they traveled the world. After retiring from military service, Vern settled his family in Hurst, Texas and began a career as a Quality Control Analyst at General Dynamics (Lockheed Martin) in Ft Worth, Texas. Vern loved to hunt mule deer with his brother on their family farm, taking the time to fly fish for trout along the way.
Vern wasn’t all work as he donated his time coaching pop warner football or his daughter’s softball teams and serving as mentor to the youth of his church by cooking breakfast (he loved pancakes) or driving the van for camping retreats. Vern was an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge of Idaho. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Valden.
He is survived by his lovely wife of over 57 years, Barbara J. McFarland of Hurst, TX; beloved daughter Jennifer McFarland also of Hurst, TX; sisters-in-law Valarie McFarland of Colorado, brother-in-law Robert Stilwell and wife Carolyn, of Washington; sisters-in-laws Connie Tunnell, of California and Marjorie Dupre and husband David of New Mexico; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. Vern was truly the best of all of us.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 9, 2019 at ST. Andrew Lutheran Church located at 504 W. Bedford-Euless Rd Hurst, TX 76053. Internment and Committal service, with full Military Honors will be held same day at 2 P.M. at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery located at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211.
