Leta Hamby Flather passed away on Monday January 16, 2023, in Burleson, Texas. She was 94.
She will be laid to rest with her husband, Colonel Herbert H Flather, Jr. in the West Point cemetery at the US Military Academy in New York. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Red Cross will be appreciated.
Mary Leta Hamby was born in Madisonville Kentucky to Clyde and Josie Hamby, on October 30, 1928, and grew up in Princeton, Kentucky. She graduated from Butler High School, Class of 1946. While attending Murray State College, she was employed at Fort Campbell, where she met her future husband. They were married in October 1951.
From their marriage until 1973, Herb and Leta served in posts across the US and Europe. Their final
posting was at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. Herb passed away in
1973. Leta remained In Durham for the next 42 years. She was active in the American Red Cross blood donations and made wreaths for Christmas with the Community Church. Annually she presented an award to the ROTC in the name of her late husband, Colonel Flather.
She was preceded in death by her husband Colonel Flather and her daughter, Elizabeth Warren.
She is survived by her three sons, Herbert H III, John Howard and Robert Hamby and her sister Marjorie Loftus of Princeton, Kentucky.
