Lewis Bishop, affectionately, known as Cowboy. He passed away March 16, 2024 at age 99. He was born in Medicine Park, Oklahoma on October 11th, 1924 to Lester Bishop and Dora Metcalf. He married Evelyn Yvonne Carter on August 28th, 1945. He was a WW II Navy Veteran, 1942 to 1946 as a gunner’s mate on LST 462. He served in New Guinea, Cape San Safure, Morotai Island, Wakde Island, Biak Island, Leyte Island, Luzon, Lingayen Gulf, Barnes Balikpapan, Australia, Philippines, San Francisco and San Diego.
He was recruited by scouts to play football in East Texas while driving the tractor on the family farm in Oklahoma. He moved to Leverette’s Chapel at age 15 and it was there he got the nickname “Cowboy”.
After the war, he worked for Fairmont Foods in Lawton and Waurika, Oklahoma. He relocated to Texas and retired after 37 years with General Motors. He served the Lord as a Deacon in the Baptist Church. He was also a member in the Lions Club. He was a children’s advocate, volunteering with the local police department.
Lewis is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Carter. He is survived by his three daughters, Carla and James Wilson, Jana and Hal Heyer and Darlena Gay and Randy Farnsworth. Grandchildren, Scott Wilson, Chellee Knight, April Hulin, Marc Vestal and he loved his 12 great grandchildren.
