Lola Kay Nelson-Spay, 74, passed away January 5 after a long and brave struggle with cancer. She was born December 29, 1947, in Texarkana, Arkansas.
Lola was known for her sweet, positive, caretaking spirit. Her greatest skill was her ability to connect with people. She had a way of making people feel they were the most important person in the world. She will be remembered for the untold number of lives she touched while on this earth. Lola taught all of us to see the silver lining in all of life’s struggles. She is our Angel.
Lola attended the University of Houston and graduated from the University of Arkansas. She was an excellent teacher and school counselor. She retired from Hurst Euless Bedford Independent School District, serving at Hurst Junior High School. In retirement, Lola was the Director of the Village Library in Hurst, an after school tutorial program where she helped young people find direction for their lives.
Lola’s greatest joy was her loving family. She is survived by her husband, Joe Spay of Bedford, brother David Simmons and Linda of Garner, North Carolina, son Trey Nelson and Andrea of Phoenix, son Ryan Nelson and Brinda of Hurst, daughter Nikki Nelson of Euless, Michael Spay of Hurst, Jeffrey Spay of Plano. Her grandchildren are David Nelson, Michael Nelson, McKenna Nelson, Haven Hefta, Paris Martinez, Kayden Nelson, and Quinn Nelson. She leaves behind her niece, Kristi Starr, nephew Matt Simmons, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Lola will be honored January 15, 4-6pm, Lucas Funeral Home, Hurst; January 16, 3:00pm First United Methodist Church Hurst, January 17, 11:00am Hillcrest Memorial Park, Texarkana.
