Lovell Nelson (Nels) Roberts, Jr., 93, of Granbury, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2022.
Nelson is predeceased by his parents as well as his younger brother Jack (Dutch).. Left to cherish his memory are his two children, Lovell Nelson Roberts, III of Glen Rose, Texas and Renee Marie Hughes of Lewisville, Texas plus four grandchildren, Josh, Jordyn and Jackson Hughes and Sophia Vitale plus many close friends who were like family to him.
Nelson was born March 12, 1929, in San Diego, California and attended High School and College there. Nelson served in both the U.S. Naval Reserves and eventually was called-up to serve as a tank commander in the Marines during the Korean conflict, being awarded two purple hearts.
Upon returning back to the states, he worked steadily in the newspaper business eventually rising to the position of Vice President of his father’s newspaper advertising representative firm.
After the sale of his father’s advertising firm, he took positions with the Orange County (CA) Register and lastly as publisher of the La Habra (CA) Daily Star Progress where he remained until his retirement.
In his retirement, Nelson settled down first in Twin Peaks, California and then in Big River, California where his time often included traveling in his beloved RV across the nation plus an extended trip with his entire family throughout Alaska. He was also a life-long member of the American Legion, serving in multiple posts during his retirement.
Nelson eventually moved to Granbury, Texas to be closer to his children, grandchildren and their children. Nelson remained in Granbury until his passing and was an active member of the local Granbury DAV.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2022 in the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas, Texas 75211. He will receive Marine honors for his service.
