Marshall A. Such, age 66, of Grapevine, TX passed away peacefully December 5, 2017 in the loving company of his daughter Annie and a few close friends.
Born in Grayling, MI on May 12, 1951, Marshall spent his childhood living in the picturesque Village of Roscommon, located in northern Michigan, which provided him with the climate and opportunity to become an expert downhill skier.
At a very early age Marshall developed a passion for music - first playing piano, and later adding drums, guitar and trumpet to his repertoire. During high school he played drums in the marching band and jazz band, and with a fellow drummer Mike Pavek co-founded a small rock and roll band “Marshall and The Deputies”. This band was unusual in that it had two separate drum sets on stage. Marshall always rightfully acknowledged that, as between them, Mike Pavek was a far better drummer and vocalist.
Marshall attended Michigan State University, then for several years lived in upstate New York, making a living as a drummer, guitarist and bandleader. Eventually, he moved to Texas where he met and married Dallas-native Christiana Black. Indianapolis, IN was his next residence, where he worked at an “oldies” radio station, and where he and wife Christie welcomed into the world the joy of their lives, their daughter Annie Rose. In the early 1990’s Marshall moved back to the Dallas area, where Annie Rose was raised.
Writing ad copy for radio and composing musical jingles inspired Marshall to co-write a musical with high school friend Stephen Taylor: November 2002 “Radio! The Musical” was performed live on-stage for two weeks at the Palace Arts Center in Grapevine, TX. Marshall’s prolific writing lasted through the decades, as his one-act play “The Recruit” was published with Brooklyn Publishing, and he went on to write and co-write over a dozen additional musicals.
Marshall’s parents Steven and Kathryn Such (Roscommon, MI) preceded him in death. Survivors are his beloved daughter Annie R. Such and granddaughter Gracie MacGregor Fiske (Dallas, TX), brother John Such (San Diego, CA) and sister Dr. Mary Such and her husband Robert Gavin (Ann Arbor, MI)
A funeral Mass is scheduled January 5, 2018 at 11:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Grapevine. Lucas Funeral Home in Grapevine, TX is coordinating arrangements. Marshall’s final resting place and internment is tentatively planned for June 2018 in Roscommon, MI.
Marshall’s family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the ICU medical staff of Grapevine Baylor Hospital.
