Maryalice was born on 13 January, 1928 to Edwin and Maude Sallade of Pittsburgh, PA. She attended the University of Ohio at Athens, majoring in journalism. Following school, her first assignment was as a copy editor in the newsroom of KDKA Pittsburgh, the nation’s first commercial radio station. The picture shown is of her in the newsroom, where she was a gifted editor. After the victory in World War II, she met a returning AAF veteran of the Pacific Campaign, Donald E. Fleming, also attending the University of Ohio. They were married for over 49 years; the union ending with her husband’s death in 2000. They had five sons together, moving about the country frequently, as her husband was an aircraft engineer at the beginning of the jet age. Maryalice chose motherhood over career during her sons’ formative years, but later returned to the workforce.
She loved to travel, and she and her husband’s assignment to Norway allowed her to travel extensively across Europe. She read voraciously and learned to speak Norsk.
After retirement, the empty-nested couple settled in Grand Prairie. As her husband’s health declined, she became his primary health giver.
Maryalice was preceded in death by her late parents and her husband.
Survivors: Brothers Dr. Richard L. Sallade, MD, and Captain Fred Sallade, USN (ret); sons Don Jr, Jeff, Mark, Pete, and Sean; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous loving family and friends.
