Michael Lloyd Barlow was born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 1, 1995 to Jim and Kate (Ginsbach) Barlow. He attended St. Francis Children’s Discovery Center; Southlake Carroll ISD, graduating in 2013; Tarrant County College; and the University of Texas Arlington. He graduated from UTA in December 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, even though he completed all coursework in July 2019.
He held a number of jobs during his brief lifetime and most recently was working towards a supervisory job at the Biscuit Bar in Deep Ellum with the goal of becoming a manager. He also had been working a second job for numerous years as an usher and security guard. His future plans included earning an MBA, participating in Toastmasters and resuming art classes.
Michael was a gifted person with a beautiful smile. He started drawing at an early age; many who knew him as a toddler were amazed at his drawings of trains, his advanced language skills and his imagination. In his early years, he found great joy in Winnie the Pooh, Thomas the Tank Engine, trains, drawing and reading. In elementary school, his writings and drawings were recognized and published. In eighth grade, he represented Southlake Carroll Middle School at the statewide National Geography Bee. While taking piano lessons, he would compose music. He played two years of football in high school and cherished his memories of being on the field as the Carroll Dragons won the 2011 state football championship.
At UTA, he pledged Phi Gamma Delta but was not initiated as the chapter was closed prior to initiation. One could hear his joy as he spoke about his fraternity. At UTA he was a member of a philosophy club and participated in many discussions of politics and religion. He was baptized at St. Philip’s, Hankinson, North Dakota and was a lifelong member of Good Shepherd Catholic Community, Colleyville, where he had been an altar server and VBS volunteer; he attended the 2011 World Youth Day with fellow parishioners.
He loved our family dog Toby, traveling, spending time at Gull Lake in Michigan, following University of Michigan football and watching sports. He visited all fifty states before turning sixteen; his international travels included Italy, Spain, Portugal, England, Germany, France, Cancun, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
