Fort Worth, Texas – Michael Ross McMahan, 71, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2023, at his home in Fort Worth, Texas.
He attended Fort Worth Public Schools and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1969 where he played golf for two years. After graduation, he attended TCC, the University of Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and a double minor in Science and History.
Michael loved sports; he began a career as a sportswriter while in college. After graduation, he worked for the Fort Worth Press and the Star Telegram as a sportswriter/photographer. Responsibilities in these positions included page layouts and design, as well as beat assignments for TCU athletics, Dallas Cowboys, Fort Worth Wings Hockey, and the Texas Rangers. He covered major events including the Cotton Bowl, World Series, United States Open Championship and the NFL Championship Game.
In 1974, Michael met Carol Gilreath on a blind date. The couple married on June 7, 1975. They had one son, Sean Ross McMahan and one grandson, Lane Michael McMahan. They remained married for 47 years, until Michael’s death.
Following his sports writing career, Michael moved into public relations/advertising in the oil and gas industry. He first worked for Ken Davis Industries as an Advertising Associate for the parent company of numerous energy related corporations including Parker Stratoflex, Cummins Southern Plains, Mid-Continent Supply Company and Unit Rig & Equipment Co. He also developed marketing tools and coordinated conventions and trade shows.
During this time, in 1981, Michael was awarded the 17th Annual Addie Award for advertising.
After some time, Michael went to work for Bob Powell Display and its successor, where he worked in the exhibit business for more than twenty years.
In 2004, Michael opened his own exhibit company, En-Genuity. His company worked with a number of corporations, most notably Electronic Data Systems or EDS. For many years EDS was the corporate sponsor for the Byron Nelson golf tournament in Dallas, Texas.
En-Genuity was responsible for the design and setup of the EDS Skybox and the Merchandise Pavilion.
Michael’s true passion was golf and golf history, in particular, he was enamored with the life of local golfing legend Ben Hogan. Michael joined Colonial Country Club where he designed the Ben Hogan Room, the Ben Hogan Office and other golf related displays.
He was the co-founder of the Ben Hogan Foundation, alongside of Lisa Scott. He was very active with the First Tee of Fort Worth which exposes youth of all backgrounds to golf and enables them to build strength of character and leadership skills through golf.
Michael is survived by his wife Carol McMahan; his son Sean Ross McMahan; his sister Marsha Page McMahan and his grandson Lane Michael McMahan.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Colonial Country Club.
