Milton "Sonny" Lucas Newsom Jr.

Milton L. Newsom Jr. (Sonny), a Vietnam Navy veteran and life-long resident of Richardson, TX, died peacefully in his hometown on April 14, 2019 at the age of 72.
Sonny was a brave, loyal and awarded soldier. While serving his country in Vietnam aboard the USS Forrestal in 1967, Sonny received accommodation from the U.S. Navy Commander for bravery and extraordinary heroism. Sonny lost hundreds of fellow soldiers and friends on July 29, 1967, but he also saved many lives during his gallant rescue efforts. After his honorable service with the Navy, he continued his heroism and passion to help others as a Richardson police officer.
Sonny was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved coaching his brothers and children throughout life. He was our historian of wonderful stories that gave us many years of laughter and togetherness. He enjoyed all sports such as fishing, hunting, skiing, soft ball and water volleyball. He would also play an occasional game of Texas Hold-em. Sonny was a Master story teller and trivia professionado. If you had a few minutes (or more), you could sit with Sonny and learn a lot about life and love. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.
Sonny is survived by his wonderful wife of 39 years, Vickie; his children Scott, Ryan and Darlene; his sister Susan Martin; brothers Mike and Kelly; grandchildren, Emily, D.J., Cameron, Berkley, Connor and great-granddaughter Maylynn. Sonny is preceded in death by his mom and dad, Bertie and Milton Sr., and his brother-in-law Elby Martin.

Viewing and visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Lucas Funeral Home located at 1321 Precinct Line Road, Hurst, Texas 76053. A committal service with Navy honors will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, April 22, 2019 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas 75211. A memorial service to celebrate Sonny’s life will follow at 1:00 P.M. at Watermark Community Church Chapel located at 7540 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, TX 75251.
