Mims Carl Reed, only child of Martin Carl and Mary Helen (Mims) Reed, was born in San Angelo, Texas on May 6, 1938. He lived the first two years on the family ranch near Mertzon before his parents moved back to Sterling City. Mims was a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, NM; Howard County Junior College, Big Spring, TX; and Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX. Mims also attended Texas A&M for a short time. It was at Howard County Junior College where he met his life partner, Karen Thomas of McKinney, TX. Mims and Karen had two wonderful children, Kelly and Thomas Carl.
Mims was involved in a number of business ventures. He was an independent manufactures representative for 23 years, Co-Owner of Southeast Loop Rental with his childhood friend, Bob Clemmons, and eventually sole owner of Hunters Headquarters in Bedford, TX.
Mims loved firearms. His grandfather, John Carl Reed, gave him his first rifle at five years of age. That gift helped form Mims’ unwavering belief of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Mims was a life member of the National Rifle Association, Texas State Rifle Association, Texas Bighorn Society, Texas Wildlife Association, and was an active member of the Dallas Safari Club for over 30 years. Mims became a noted collector of various firearms. He formed the Sako Collectors Association and in 1987 he organized and chaired the North Texas Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Mims had the good fortune to hunt on four continents but it was Africa that stole his heart. Mims loved to watch his family hunt and shoot be it in Africa or on one of the family ranches.
Mims leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Karen; his daughter Kelly Reed Fulghum and husband Ben of Colleyville, TX; his son Thomas Carl Reed and wife Debbie of Haltom City, TX; granddaughters Kate Dobbin and husband Sam of Fort Worth, TX; Anne Dorf and husband Andrew of Fort Worth, TX; Taylor Courtney Reed of Fort Worth, TX; and Misty Chandler and husband Nathan, of Midlothian, TX; and great grandson, Joseph James Dorf of Fort Worth, TX.
