Mr. Wheeler was born on May 15, 1923 in Kennedale, but spent most of his life in Roanoke. He married the love of his life, Mary, before leaving to serve his country as a mechanic in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return, he continued using his mechanical skills in the private sector, as he could fix practically anything. He retired after 40 years at Jagoe Public Construction Company, where he took pride in his work as Superintendent. Even 22 years later, he could still point out every flaw in the roads other people built and tell you the mistakes that caused them. He spent his last 20 years entertaining as the emcee at Pickin' & Grinnin' on Thursday nights at the Roanoke Community Center, introducing each musician, telling corny jokes, and dancing around with moves that would make Elvis jealous. Dub was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke, where he always arrived early so he could get his favorite parking space and his favorite seat.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Carlton Wheeler, and by a grandson, Ronny Holcomb.

Survivors: Daughters, Doris Mucklow and husband, Edd, Gayle Holcomb and husband, Johnnie, Barbara Latham and husband, Matt, and Pam Norwood and husband, Dale; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
