With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Peggy Jean Burton Payne. Peggy passed on November 6, 2024, at the age of 93. Peggy, born on May 21, 1931, in Decatur, Texas, to Viola Beatrice White Burton and Charlie Alvin Burton, was - and will always be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Growing up in Decatur, Peggy attended local schools before marrying her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Payne, in November 1948. Throughout their marriage, they moved to various small towns where Kenneth taught and coached, eventually settling in Keller in 1967 as superintendent of schools. Together, they raised a loving family but parted ways in 1984.
Peggy was a dedicated member of Keller United Methodist Church for 57 years, actively participating in the United Methodist Women's group and serving as a Stephen's Minister. She was immensely involved in the Keller Independent School District PTA and cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren.
In her free time, Peggy found joy in traveling - her favorite being her trip to Israel, tending to her yard, keeping up with politics, and surrounding herself with the warmth of family.
Peggy was preceded in death by her mother Viola Beatrice White Burton Shepard, and father Charlie Burton, her brother Kenneth Burton and grandson David Payne.
Peggy's legacy lives on through her devoted sister, Barbara; her children, Kathy, Steven, Belinda, Russell, and Kendra; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The memorial service celebrating Peggy's life will be held at Keller United Methodist Church, where she worshiped for many years. Following the service, a reception will take place to honor Peggy's memory. The service information will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to be made to Samaritan's Purse or Keller United Methodist Church in Peggy's honor.
Peggy Jean Burton Payne leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her kindness, love, and generosity will forever be remembered. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love of those who cherished her.
