Ram Swaroop, a renowned retired Public Health Officer, was born on June 11, 1932, to Jack Prasad and Indira Davi as the eldest of nine siblings. He passed away on September 14, 2024, as the last living sibling. Ram began his career at the age of 12 as a Japanese-to-English interpreter in 1944 during World War II. He earned a Public Health degree from Rangoon Health Training School in 1953 and worked at the Monhin health clinic in Kachin State in 1956, where he met Lu Labang. Ram and Lu married in January 1958 and had five children together, in addition to Lu's two previous children, raising a total of seven children. Since 1958, Ram has worked tirelessly as a public health professional, campaigning in remote areas of Kachin State, walking village to village, and administering immunisations and looking after those in need.
The family of Ram and Lu consisted of seven children, nineteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Presently, three of their children are alive, including Nhkum Lu Taung and Nhkum Naw Aung, who live in Myanmar and Cynthia McMillan (Nhkum Htu Raw), who resides in Australia. Nhkum Roi Tawng and Andrew Seng (Nhkum La Seng) have both passed away. Ram was a content, humble, and patient man who always displayed a willingness to help others and maintained a positive and selfless attitude. He spent his final five and a half years at Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Dallas, Texas.
Many of his grandchildren grew up under his care.
The final three years of his life were marked by his acceptance of Jesus Christ as personal savior and redeemer. As he approached the end, reflection on the Lord's love filled him with peace, and he passed into eternity serenely.
Ram Swaroop lived a life of service, wisdom and family. His kindness touched everyone and his legacy will live on. Rest in peace.
