Ret. Lt. Col. Richard Wright Harris

March 24, 1924 — March 12, 2016

Dick Harris, widow of the late Elizabeth Williamson, passed away at 10:35 p.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine, Texas. His passing was twelve days shy of his 92nd Birthday.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00am, Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Lucas Funeral Home in Grapevine. Interment will be at 1:15pm, Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.

Dick was born the morning of March 24, 1924 in Comanche, Texas to Dick W. Harris and Mae Gore Harris. He married Elizabeth Mae Williamson on November 6, 1947 in North Dakota.

Dick served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during WW II, landing at Omaha beach six weeks after the D-Day Invasion. His unit, an artillery outfit, then preceded across Europe liberating families along the way. He saw and heard things most could not fathom. After the war, he entered college at the North Dakota School of Mines and completed a degree in Geology. He planned to work in his father’s oil company, but while in college he was a member of the ROTC and took the commission of 2nd Lt. He ended up serving in the Korean War and retired in 1969, while serving in Hawaii during the Vietnam War. He served a total of 27 years retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

After retiring from the military and seeing their two kids graduate high school in Hawaii, Dick and Betty became entrepreneurs with an international network marketing company and moved the family to Australia. After 4 years in Australia in which they lived in Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne, they became homesick for the United States and returned to Texas where Dick’s family lived. They never forgot their love for the beach and eventually moved to Sea Isle in Galveston where they lived for several years. Dick and Betty were active in the Sea Isle retirement community of Galveston and enjoyed the company of all their friends.

After a few years of hurricanes in Galveston, Dick and Betty moved to Austin to be closer to their son, Danny and out of harm’s way. Once again, they lived near the water in Lago Vista. After several years in Central Texas, Dick and Betty, their daughter, Carol Lynn, and son-in-law, Phill, decided to buy a home together in Trophy Club, Texas.

Dick's family is extremely thankful for the wonderful care he received from his doctors and the caretakers at Woodridge in Grapevine, the Good Place, Baylor Hospital, and Encompass Home Health. He loved his church, friends, and parakeets at Sedona Place.

He passed away peacefully and is with his Lord and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Mae "Betty" Harris, who preceded him in passing, as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wright Harris of Comanche, Texas.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Ray of Bridgeport, Washington; daughter, Carol Lynn Shorter and husband Phill of Trophy Club, Texas; son, Dan Harris and wife Debbie of Austin, Texas; granddaughter, Jolene Wise of Sydney, Australia; grandson, Daniel Harris and wife Kelly, also of Sydney, Australia; granddaughter, Molly Harris of Austin, Texas; and three great-grandchildren.
