Rita Virginia Mack, age 80, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Her loving spirit and endearing humor will be missed by many who had the privilege to know and love her.
Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, July 26, 1940, to William James Montgomery and Rita Rogers Montgomery. In 1961 she married Frederick Sheldon and relocated to Beaufort, SC, where her husband was with Marine VMF 333 and Rita was employed by the Department of the Navy Hospital. In 1963, the family relocated to Austin, Texas. Rita worked for USDA Veterinary Services and retired after 31 years of service. She served on various animal disease eradication task forces in CA, MA, NJ, CT among others.
Rita also served as Coordinator for the VS Regional Federal Woman's Program for 3 years. In 1990, she married Dr. Robert Mack with over 30 years of marriage until his passing on June 2, 2020.
Rita is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Sheldon Jones; grandchildren: Weston Ray Jones and Allison Anne Jones; sister, Nancy Walfrida Sasser and many nieces and nephews.
Rita is predeceased by her parents; husband, Robert Mack; son, Michael G. Sheldon; siblings, Bettie Jean Cloud, Barbara Anne Meadows and William J. Montgomery, Jr.
