Robert was born January 26, 1922 in Lewisville, Texas to W.B. and Nona Nail. He graduated from Denton High School and attended North Texas Agricultural College in Arlington.
While attending college in Arlington, Robert met the love of his life, Iva Lee Fuller. After a short courtship, he and Iva were married on June 28, 1942, at the home of her parents, what is now the historic Fuller House. Seventy years later, Robert and Iva would renew their vows in the same spot in which they were married.
Robert joined the United States Marines in 1944, went through boot camp in San Diego, then boarded ship for the Pacific Theater. He landed on the island of Okinawa on Easter Sunday, April 1,1945 and was there through the end of the war. He was then deployed to China for repatriation duties and returned home to Texas in 1946.
Following World War II, Robert and Iva moved to Denton where they both graduated from North Texas State Teachers College. Shortly thereafter they relocated to Euless and Robert became the first postmaster in Euless. His first post office was a 6’ by 6’ enclosed corner of the Fuller Bros. and Nail store. The store sold groceries, gas, and feed to area residents and dairies. The Euless community grew, as did the post office, and Robert remained postmaster through three more moves, including the move to the current post office. He retired from the postal service in 1980 after 31 years of employment.
Robert was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Euless and a founding member of the Euless Volunteer Fire Department and Euless Historical Preservation Committee. He was also a Mason and a member of Scottish Rite. Robert enjoyed wood-working and carpentry, and loved to whittle and carve on old pieces of wood. He was an accomplished fly fisherman, having taught many family members and friends the art of casting a fly line and snagging a trout, and he loved nothing better than fly fishing on the Rio Grande River in Creede, Colorado.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Iva, his parents, W.B. and Nona Nail, and his three sisters.
In addition to many friends, Robert is survived by his daughter, Linda Pool and her husband Mike. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lauren Pool Gunter and husband Jeff, Stephen Pool and fiancée Francesca Renouard, and Susan Pool McCraney and husband Will. He was blessed with two great grandsons, Robert Logan Gunter and Harley Boone Gunter.
