Ruth, or Nana, as she was fondly known to most, was born in Midlothian, Texas on December 7, 1930 to R.H. and Ruth Newton. In 1949, she married the love of her life, John Lynn Barkley. They had been married 55 years at his passing in 2004. A U.S. Navy wife, she and John moved to College Station, Texas to pursue his career as a Veterinarian after his discharge from the Navy. The Lord blessed them with 3 children, Skip, Connie and Greg, as well as numerous friends along the way. Nana was a “collector” of friends. Once you got to know the Barkleys, you were always considered a friend. They lived in Whitewright, Texarkana, Duncanville, and Granbury, where they retired and then spent years visiting a lifetime of friends they met along the way. They loved camping, visiting and traveling with many of their summers spent in Colorado. Nana loved art and painted as a hobby. Nana was a fierce competitor at card and board games. She was involved in Bible Study Fellowship for many years and was a follower of Jesus Christ and has been reunited in heaven with her husband John.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all four of her siblings.
She is survived by her son Skip Barkley, daughter Connie Harrell and her husband Bobby, and son Greg Barkley; five grandchildren, Bonnie Ratcliffe and husband Josh, Katie Ducote, Lindsay Harrell Flynt and husband Jason, Becca Harrell Wallace and husband, John, and Colten Barkley. She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren as well and numerous loving family and friends.
