On Saturday, June 8, 2019, Sally Hollowell Harris, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away at the age of 86.
Sally was born on December 23, 1932, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Davis and Helen (Lomasney) Hollowell. She grew up in Fulton, New York, and, after graduating from Fulton High School, attended Syracuse University, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Theta sorority. On July 11, 1951, she married United States Air Force 2nd Lieutenant William E. Harris, Jr. Over the course of the next 30 years, living in and traveling to multiple locations around the world, they raised two sons and a daughter.
Never one to sit still or decline any opportunity to learn something new, Sally had a passion for life and all it offered. She truly embraced being a loving military wife, mom and homemaker – and it showed in everything she did. Her family always came first in her world, and the world she created was a happy and fulfilling one. She loved entertaining and creating special moments for friends and family – and there were a lot of those! An engaging conversationalist on a wide range of topics, Sally was never at a loss for words when it came to discussing her favorites – current events and politics. After her husband retired, she secured a position in a Designer Salon for a top women’s clothing store and was constantly sought out by those who wanted her tasteful guidance. Sally was also an avid golf fan, whether playing rounds with her husband whenever they could or watching her favorite golfers every week on television. And how she loved the Cowboys – especially Cole Beasley, whose jersey she would often wear for their games.
She fully embraced technology, never hesitating to send texts, emails and an occasional ‘selfie’ to those in her expansive Contacts list. No surprise, her iPhone and iPad were her constant companions. Playing Words With Friends with her was always an experience. Her ability to squeeze words (and points) out of meager letter offerings was a source of constant amazement to those with whom she played, as was her ability to keep several games going at the same time. She usually began her days by solving the local newspaper’s Cryptogram puzzle, and did so with speed and an uncommon ease that bordered on otherworldly.
Sally also found great peace, joy and solitude in quilting. She was a true master at it, her pieces frequently featuring intricate and difficult patterns and color selections that were both beautiful and full works of art! Always a lady, she was real, genuine and strong and never sought attention. Sally was someone you could always talk to and know she would never steer you wrong. Anyone who knew her, loved her.
Sally was preceded in death by her father, Davis, her mother, Helen, her brother, John, her husband, Bill, and her son, John. She is survived by her son, Bill (Beth) in Des Moines, Iowa, and daughter Patti Hare (Steve) in Keller, Texas. She’s also survived by four grandchildren: Molly Harris in Tacoma, Washington, and Grant, Drew and Hollis Leevy in Keller, Texas.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Lucas Funeral Home, 1601 Main Street in Keller, Texas. Flowers may be sent to 1601 Main Street in Keller, Texas.
