Sammy Oscar Hyde

October 4, 1949 — December 26, 2018

Sammy Hyde of Keller, Texas passed away on Dec. 26, 2018. He was born on Oct. 4, 1949, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to Francis and Lucille Hyde.
Sammy grew up in Texas City, Texas where he excelled in several sports, but basketball was his passion. When Sammy graduated from Texas City High School in 1968, he held several high school records in basketball and was offered numerous basketball scholarships from colleges around the country. Sammy chose to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a full basketball scholarship.
It is here where he met Susan, the love of his life. The two were married in May of 1972, and two years later Sam graduated with a degree in secondary education. The couple then moved to Irving, Texas to begin their teaching careers, Susan as an elementary school teacher and Sam as a history teacher and coach at various middle schools and high schools in the Irving Independent School District. It was at these schools that Sam not only shared his love of history – especially Texas history – and his zeal for sports with his students, but forged what would become lifelong friendships with his fellow coaches.
After three years of teaching and coaching, at the encouragement of his father-in-law, Dick Rundle, Sam began working on offshore drilling rigs, starting out as a roustabout and working his way up the ranks to toolpusher. Susan and Sam would soon adjust to a life with Sam working offshore for two weeks at a time and then being home for two weeks.
In July of 1982, their long-awaited baby, John, arrived. Sammy loved being a father, and during the weeks he was not offshore, he and John were inseparable.
Sammy returned to teaching and coaching in 1987. He retired in 2010, and he and Susan moved to Keller to be closer to their grandchildren. Sammy enjoyed hunting, woodworking in his shop, traveling and playing with his dogs.
Sammy is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe Mobley and Danny Hyde; and a sister, Gracie Mobley Nine.
He will be greatly missed by his loving family members: Susan, his wife of 46 years; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Nicki Hyde, and their children, Sammy’s beloved grandchildren, Lyla, Rex and Cash, of Southlake; three sisters-in-law; four nephews and four nieces and their children; and several cousins.
The visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019 at Lucas Funeral Home in Keller. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 at Lucas Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Ames Cemetery in Ames, Oklahoma.
