Scott Russell Borderud passed away in Burleson, Texas, on October 24, 2021, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Scott was born in Fargo, North Dakota, November 26, 1950, to William Russell Borderud and Frances Borderud (née Longo). He spent much of his childhood living in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Stamford High School in Stamford, Connecticut, where he was a state champion wrestler. In 1968, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, and played offensive line on the football team.
In 1972, Scott graduated from Annapolis and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. While he was stationed in Keflavik, Iceland, he met Carol Anne Sanders, a nurse in the United States Navy. They were married in 1978 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. For 43 years of marriage, she was the love of his life, faithfully by his side until the end.
After serving in the Marines, Scott received a divinity degree from Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York. He was ordained in 1987. The following year, he was commissioned as a chaplain in the United States Army, and served his country for the next 18 years in many places, including Fort Hood, Texas; Amberg, Germany; Baumholder, Germany; Fort Monmouth, New Jersey; Fort Carson, Colorado; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Meade, Maryland, and Brunssum, Netherlands.
In his military career, he served during the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror. In Operation Desert Storm, he served with the 1st Cavalry Division, which fought in Iraq. While serving in the Army, he received a doctorate in theology by correspondence from the University of South Africa. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2006.
From 2006 to 2010, he served on faculty at the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he taught courses on ethics and leadership. From 2010 to 2018, he served as the senior pastor of First Alliance Church of Toccoa, Georgia. From 2019 to 2020, he served as the Christian and Missionary Alliance district superintendent for Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Scott was a happy warrior, full of good cheer, boundless energy, and uncommon courage. He relished the joy and humor in everyday life. He was a man of unique tastes, with great affection for architecture, the music of J.S. Bach, traditional hymns, motorcycles, Mercedes-Benz cars, and his favorite breed of dog, the boxer. An avid football fan, he cheered on his beloved Minnesota Vikings in good times and in bad. Scott was an astute observer of the human condition, who often quoted the Bible, William Shakespeare, and his favorite president, Theodore Roosevelt. Notably, he practiced what he preached: service to God and country, dedication to his wife and family, and bold leadership. He treated everyone with kindness and respect.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Scott is survived by his wife, Carol Borderud of Burleson, Texas; son, Josh Borderud, and wife Jennifer of Waco, Texas; daughter, Christy Cramer, and husband Ben of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; daughter, Katherine Borderud, of Brooklyn, New York; grandchildren, Henry Cramer, Julia Cramer, Cole Cramer, Russell Cooper “R.C.” Borderud, and Lillian Borderud; and brothers Mark Borderud and Jon Borderud.
