Susan Johnson passed away at her home of 29 years in Hurst, Texas on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at the age of 74. She was preceded in death by parents, Mr. And Mrs. Jack Boyles, and son, William Jason Marshall. Born and raised in Mississippi, she moved to Hurst in 1994 with her two young children and her mother, who would have turned 101 on the same day as her passing. Susan was a graduate of Ole Miss and earned her Masters in Sociology from Mississippi College. She lived a full and adventurous life and always with an open heart to those who needed her most.
As an only child Susan knew early on that she wanted a big family. A fierce believer in the power of nurture, she adopted her three surviving children and raised them as her own. When her son, William, passed away in 2011, she took in his two young boys who gave her life renewed purpose. She was once again doing what she loved most, nurturing the minds and souls of young people. Her ultimate companion in life was her German Shepherd, Apache, whom she nurtured through numerous health issues, but who was a kind and loyal best friend.
Susan had a creative mind and bright spirit, often saying she marched to the beat of a different drummer. Always an avid reader, Susan believed in the power of education. She found community in education at Bearss Academy in Jackson, MS, where her children attended. A generation later she found Fort Worth Christian for her grandsons, where they received so much more than an education—many nurturing hearts, true friendship, and a strong support system for which Susan was eternally grateful. The beat of her drum may have slowed, but she continued to march to God’s calling to her last day.
Susan is survived by her three children and six grandchildren. In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be sent to her two grandsons, Jay and Jamal Marshall, at
