Thomas Clay Myers

October 21, 1938 — May 18, 2015

BEDFORD -- Thomas Clay Myers passed away from this life Monday, May 18, 2015, after a long battle with heart failure.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday at The Hills Church in Southlake. Interment: Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst.
Tom was born Oct. 21, 1938, in Tupelo, Ark. He attended Harding University, where he met his wife of 55 years, Nancy. He received his bachelor's degree from TCU in 1961, his master's degree from the University of North Texas in 1965 and his Ed.D. in educational administration at North Texas in 1983. By the age of 25, he had become principal of Fort Worth Christian School, where he aided in getting the school accredited. He and Nancy then taught at their alma mater, Harding University, in the late 1970s. At the age of 37, he became superintendent of the Valley View ISD, where he helped the district return to full accreditation with the Texas Education Agency. In 1980 he became superintendent of the Bridgeport ISD, and in 1986 he began seven years of service as superintendent of schools in the Keller ISD, during its greatest period of rapid growth. In 1988 he was chosen as Educator of the Month by the Texas School Business publication. He retired as superintendent of the Gainsville ISD in 2000, and he and Nancy moved to Bedford.
He was a member of The Hills Church in Southlake. In past years he served as a deacon of Eastridge Church of Christ in Fort Worth.
Tom devoted his life to the education of young people. But Tom loved all people. His idea of fun was to sit and chat with anyone of any age, stranger or friend. As a superintendent, he was well known to visit frequently in the schools to enjoy visiting with students and staff and getting their perspectives. As described by Jane Bryant, former communications coordinator of the Keller ISD, "With a quick smile on his face, a hint of merriment in his eyes, a commanding presence that demands your attention, he begins his third year at the helm of one of the fastest-growing districts in the state."
But above all, Tom was devoted to his family. He dearly loved his wife, his children and their spouses, his two granddaughters, who were his greatest joy, and all the other members of the extended family. They all knew they could count on him for support and encouragement at all times. He was a soft-hearted, generous man who was always for the underdog, and he was an anchor for his family.
Survivors: His wife of 55 years, Nancy Banowsky Myers; son, Andrew and his wife, Helen; daughter, Melissa Drake and husband, Zane; granddaughters, Morgan and Bayley Drake; sister, Sue Shirley and her husband, Bernard; many family members; many friends; and uncounted people he helped in their education and careers.
