Tommie Hilda Smith

Tommie Hilda Smith, 90, loving grandmother, friend, and neighbor died Tuesday, Oct 11, 2016.
Memorial Service: 10am Saturday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Rd., Hurst.
Visitation: 6-8pm Friday at Lucas Funeral Home.

Tommie was born in a house on First Street across from the courthouse in Ft. Worth on Dec 4, 1925. She was the only child of Thomas and Stella Wilson. Her family along with their extended family traveled around TX during the Depression in a medicine show. Life was hard and education was limited. The family settled in Haltom City during WWII when gas rations prevented further travel. At 18, she felt rich after landing a job making shells for the Navy at a local munitions' plant.
Tommie married Kirby Smith on January 7, 1950. Once settled in Richland Hills, they never left. Tommie became the gold standard of the post WWII 50's housewife and mother. She helped Kirby in his business, she raised 3 kids, she made being sick fun, she kept order, she had time for us and our schools, we made A's on art projects she created, she gave the best pool parties, she pulled weeds and loved her yard, she was magic with babies, she served her church and the Riverside Lions' Club, she traveled the world, she adored her grandchildren and great grands, she lovingly guided her parents, her Aunt Cecil and our dad to the other side, but mostly she showed us how to be generous, how to grow old gracefully and how to sow sweetness along the path.
The family gratefully thanks Dr. Gayden and Dr. Hwang and the caring staff at North Hills Hospital and the equally caring staff at Remarkable Healthcare. We thank her supportive church family at Birdville Baptist Church. Lastly, we thank all the neighbors, new and old, living and dead on Scranton Drive from 1956-2016.
Survivors: Daughter, Cherry Langford and husband Jim; son, Van Smith and wife Debbie; daughter, Angie Holt and husband Tom; grandchildren, Leigh Langford, Jami Wood and husband Adam, Blair Furrh and husband Duncan, Ashley Stigall and husband Garrett, Laura Holt, Riley Smith and his wife Sydney, Rani Smith and Reid Smith; great grandchildren, Aaron Wood, Micah Wood and Madeleine Stigall.
