Vertalee Estelle Coleman passed away Sunday, June 7, 2020. She was born in Tokio, Tx on January 9, 1928 to Ernest Clifford and Lela Belle Brock. Vertalee met her husband, John A. Coleman in the 6th grade and married him in 1947 after he returned from WWII. They were married by Pastor R.P. Davis, after which John asked how much he owed the preacher. The preacher replied “Whatever you think she’s worth” to which John replied that he didn’t have that much. Truer words were never spoken as Vertalee dedicated her life to her husband, her family, and her community. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science, which she then applied to many years of teaching elementary education. She was one of the founding organizers of the Roanoke Meals on Wheels and a volunteer with “Friends of the Library” as Puppeteer for Storytime at Roanoke Library. She also contributed many hours volunteering at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Trophy Club. She, along with her husband John contributed to the Denton County Historical Museum, the Roanoke Visitor Center and Museum, the Northwest Band Boosters, the Metroport Rotary Club, and various other charities and organizations. She and John were also always glad to see friendly faces at the Senior Luncheon Program at the Roanoke Community Center. An enthusiastic seamstress, she made many wedding dresses for the women in her family, along with prom dresses, doll dresses for disadvantaged youth, quilts for friends and family and to auction for charity. Vertalee was known for her kindness and her wide smile and will always be remembered as someone who used up everything, she had to show her love for others.
