Vivian “Gig” Ogletree was born in Vernon, Texas to parents Ruby and Alvin Tiroff. She was one of seven siblings and grew up in the Poly neighborhood of Fort Worth. To earn her own money, she started working at the Varsity Theatre at age 14. She was a proud graduate of Poly High School, Class of 1949. She married her love, Robert “Bob” Ogletree in 1950 and they were married almost 60 years before his death in 2010.
Vivian was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Bedford. She was a member of the ladies’ craft group and enjoyed making items for their yearly fundraising bazaar. She was an outstanding seamstress who made many of her daughter and granddaughter’s clothes, along with numerous baby gifts for her great grandchildren. She was still sewing up until she broke her hip in 2018.
Vivian was kind, caring and non-judgmental. She lived her life with love and purpose, and it showed. She loved and was loved. She was a people person and kept up with friends and neighbors for many years. She wrote wonderful letters, always written in her beautiful long hand, and loved sending cards for every occasion. She lived life with kindness and grace but could always make you laugh. We will remember her tacky jokes, comments, and birthday cards fondly and with a smile. If you knew Vivian, you know family was most important to her. She was a favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews and took them under her wing when their parents passed away. She loved the holidays and big family gatherings and looked forward to her favorite ham rolls every Christmas Eve. We will always miss her divinity candy because no one can make it like she did. She was “Granny Gig” to her great grandchildren who loved her immensely and looked forward to their Christmas stockings she spent all year making. Everyone at Parkwood, where she spent the last four years of her life, commented how sweet she was. That was just her nature. And she remained true to the person she was until the end, still trying to be helpful until a few minutes before she passed.
What an amazing 91 years of life she lived. It was full of laughter, love, and compassion and she will be missed beyond measure. She was a bright light, and the world today is dimmer without her. While another piece of our hearts is missing, we are rejoicing that she has been reunited with her love, Bob, and daughter, Lisa Ann, for all eternity.
