What is Human Composting?

Human composting is a sustainable alternative to traditional burial and cremation methods. The process involves placing the body into a specially designed vessel filled with natural materials such as wood chips, alfalfa, and straw. Over the course of approximately 8 to 12 weeks, naturally occurring microbes break down the body, resulting in the formation of about one cubic yard of nutrient-dense soil. This soil can then be used to enrich gardens, forests, or conservation lands; fostering new life and contributing positively to the environment.

The Process

  1. Laying In: The body is respectfully placed into a vessel surrounded by the carefully calibrated plant materials. The vessel is then sealed, and the transformation into soil begins.
  2. Transformation: Over the next several weeks, the natural process of decomposition is facilitated within the vessel, with the plant materials and controlled conditions ensuring a safe and efficient transformation.
  3. Completion: After the process is complete, the resulting soil is removed and can be utilized according to the wishes of the family; whether that's nourishing a personal garden or contributing to local conservation efforts.

Environmental Benefits

Choosing human composting significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with traditional end-of-life practices. This process uses 87% less energy than cremation and prevents approximately one metric ton of carbon dioxide from being emitted per individual. By converting the body into life-giving soil, we not only honor our loved ones but also contribute to the health and sustainability of our planet.
